API improvements for 2.0 (meta issue)

    Description

      This is a meta issue covering various API improvements we'd like to make in 2.0.
 Each specific improvement will get its own issue, blocking this one. 
Theoretically, these could be done in 1.x by adding new APIs and deprecating old
ones, but as they bring no user-visible improvements, it's not worth the
bookkeeping hassle.  We'll just fix them in 2.0.
