The command-T assignment in this snapshot becomes true only after OOo start centre has closed. When OOo is launched (and start centre is foremost) command-T is unrecognised. (32.04 KB, image/png)

Description Graham Perrin 2008-09-28 08:34:47 UTC
The key combination
Apple-n
should present something new.

I see that for example Apple-t presents a new text document. For other types, other letters, but
nothing for n.

I recommend:

 * Apple-n to present the Start centre (Welcome to OpenOffice.org).

As Apple-n (command-n, if you prefer) is so well established — so widely recognised in other
applications — I feel that failing to recognise it in any way will be a fairly major omission.

Cross reference: Issue 86520.

Thanks for consideration.

In issue 86520 pl asked:

> And what kind of document would Cmd-N open then ?

 1. OOo start centre is 'close to' a new Text document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, Database, or Formula.

 2. For those six file types, specifically, we already have command-T -S -P -D -A -F respectively.

 3. I see now (release candidate 4) that command-N produces a new text document
_but only if_ OOo start centre is in foreground.

So: (2) and (3) are inconsistent.

If command-T produces a new text document when OOo is first launched (think: first impressions), so command-T should produce a
new text document when windows are closed. And so it does; instinctively this feels good, consistent :)

If command-N produces a new text document when OOo is first launched, so command-N should produce at least *something* when
windows are closed. But it does not; instinctively this is unexpected, a frustration :(

= Suggestions (refined, based on new observations) =

 a) If no windows are open, then command-N should do something: present OOo start centre seems (to me) to be an ideal closest
thing to a new file of any sort

----

For a user who may dislike suggestion (a) you might add to OOo:

 b) a preference, through which the user can (for example) decide that in the absence of windows, command-N should present for
them a text document. Or if (for example) the user creates presentations more often than text documents, they might prefer to have
command-N present a new presentation.

----

That (b) above could be a future refinement, for power users. Non-essential.

IMHO it's more important to _never_ have command-N unrecognised; so suggestion (a) should be a priority.

Thanks for consideration

In my comment to the preceding attachment I wrote:

On closer inspection: foreground presence of start centre causes _six_ (not only one) of these eight commonplace key
combinations to become unrecognised.

* As users may often close all OOo windows, so we should assume that the eight key combinations will be commonplace.

* As users may often launch OOo, so we should also assume that the key combination(s) in that situation will be
commonplace.

Concerning the inconsistency: at this point in time, I see no need for a separate ticket.

So in short Cmd-N should become the new shortcut for the startcentre in the
quickstart menu. That should be done when implementing issue 86520.
