Major Description
the internal tree abstraction hides an essential implementation detail (content-hash based identifiers) from the very implementation, leading to confusing and sometimes awkward code. furthermore there's a considerable amount of code duplication.
this internal tree abstraction should be removed for the sake of a cleaner codebase.
