Description evoci 2006-08-31 12:23:46 UTC
Choosing 'Insert - Link to External Data' opens the External Data dialog.
You select a spreadsheet.
Available tables/ranges does not appear, and OK button is grayed

Please use the query facilities of Issuezilla before submitting Issues. A simple
search for External data in the description field and Spreadsheet as component
would have shown Issue 1834 which this one is a duplicate of.

Frank, thanks for this.

Please note the following:
1) It is my habit to query for issues, in order to save mine and other's time.
2) Running the query you suggest does not points to the 1834
3) I understand (and it was not simple, believe me) that 1834 is related to CSV
files, which is not my case. 1834 claims that this function is intended for
spreadsheets or files with objects, which is what I am trying to.

Finally, I would be grateful if you can explain me how this issue (try linking a
spreadsheet does not light OK) is related to 1834, which is marked 'FIXED'
Thanks for your time, and consider that I am just trying to contribute.

Elio

Hi,

this is an extract from the Help system regarding External Data; inserting :

You can use the same method to insert ranges defined by *name* from a Calc or
Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

So your Spreadsheet probably does not contain any range name and therefore could
not be linked in this way. Issue 1834 solved this problem by inserting a new
Menu command 'Insert-Sheet from file'. Therefore this is a double to Issue 1834.

Sorry if I sounded harsh, but in most cases the problem is with CSV ot text
files and the external data dialog. Your case is a special case of it. And yes,
the query doesn't show up 1834 directly but a lot of duplicates and following
these you finally gets to Issue 1834..

Thanks for your contribution.
