There exists a section "reduce gradients" in Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Print. When you check it, you can set either the number of "gradient stripes" or choose "intermediate color". This worked well in OOO3.2.1, but no longer in AOO3.4.1. It is broken at least since OOo3.3 build 9514.

According to http://dailytips.net76.net/?p=585 this feature is used to reduce the amount of data transfered to the printer. But I'm not sure whether it is needed nowadays.

Indeed, that option seems to be rather outmoded, option should be removed

Forgot to mention, indeed selector "Nuber of Gradient Stripes" no longer has no visible effect for me in current AOO versions (but it had as expected with OOo 3.1.1)
