I launch OpenOffice and select 'Open' from the launcher.  When I actually try to open a file the application shuts down.  No crash report is generated.  The same thing happens when I try to create a new file.  I tried to open the writer directly through the start menu.  Nothing hapened.

This seems to be a duplicate of bug 121625 - please have a look at this issue.
There are also some hints regarding such crashes in our release notes, section known issues - http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html.

Please provide feedback about your experience regarding the given solutions/workarounds. Thanks in advance.
