Description

It appears that if a top-level variable contains a JS extension element, that
element is silently not called (or an empty string is returned).

A call to an extension function works correctly in a top level variable, and an
extension element works correctly when called within a template.

The problem occurs for xalan-j_2_2 as well as xalan-j_2_4_D1
