      Description

We cannot assume that we can connect to the client (unless that's specifically a feature of the workflow) as that will typically be executing on a machine with one or more strict firewalls between it and us. Must ensure that any connections are always made from the client to the workflow instance (perhaps by a mediator) and not the other way round.

However, the direction of connection (governed by firewall policies) does not need to match the direction of message flow. If an XMPP message fabric (or other such) is in use then (provided the client is connected to it) it is possible to push messages back to the client.
