Description

Step 1:
Remove all references to function names from error message texts.
While doing that, keep track of inconsistencies in the way errors are
reposrted and add notes about them to this issue.

Step 2:
With the help of these notes, decide on a consistent approack to error
reporting, and review and correct all error messages.
