At the moment I carry three patches in the Debian package which I consider suitable for upstream. They mostly eliminate quirks of the build system (like user flag variable mangling and unexpected default options for C/C++), but there's also a change to the pkg-config file: the addition of pthread options. It's probably easiest to review them at https://salsa.debian.org/shib-team/xml-security-c/-/commits/build-fixups, where you can also generate plain diffs for Subversion, but I'm willing to submit them in some other format if you prefer.
