Running both "Mysos" and "Mysos software" in Google search yield results but non close to what Apache Mysos does.

The first 3 results are for Apache Mysos, after that the first page is a mix of Apache Mysos links and results for an iOS app which is "Europe's smallest personal safety alarm for lone workers"

      Description

Create Podling name search for Apache Mysos incubating.

"Apache Mysos is an Apache Mesos framework for running MySQL instances.

Mysos runs on Apache Mesos to dramatically simplify the management of MySQL instances. It is designed to offer:

      * Efficient hardware utilization through multi-tenancy (in performance-isolated containers)
      * High reliability through preserving the MySQL state during failure and automatic backing up to/restoring from HDFS
      * An automated self-service option for bringing up new MySQL clusters
      * High availability through automatic MySQL master failover
      * An elastic solution that allows users to easily scale up and down a MySQL cluster by changing the number of slave instances
      "

About the thread on board@ you forgot one other board member expressing a negative opinion, and several other ASF members expressing negative opinions along the lines of "blocker for graduation", "renaming as soon as possible is recommended", "-1 to this name", etc.

I'm absolutely fine with letting the community drive this, as I said elsewhere just trying to avoid them the hassle of having to rename late.

yes, a discussion on the board@ list has occurred, but outside of yourself and Shane no one else who is on the current board has replied in on the issue. Also you are the only one who is on the board who has stated a negative response towards this name. I feel to say the board as a whole would reject the name is a broad assumption and should not be brought here in the context of a name search.

So far we have had several people from the Apache Mesos community and PMC state that they do not feel that this name is an issue, we also have 4 Mesos PMC members on the project and the Mesos PMC chair is a mentor.

After performing the due diligence for the name search above and based on the reaction from the Apache Mesos community so far, I would not consider this a negative name. Personally I am neither for or against this name, but more to give the opportunity for the project and community the choice to decide on what it wishes to be called and to foster that community in any way we possible can. If, through the course of the name search, it does come up that this is not a suitable name due to it impacting any of our other communities in a negative way, or whatever other specific reason, then at that time I would be happy to help the community determine a new name in a positive forum.

I think that this name is unacceptable due to phonetic confusion with the Mesos project itself. This is apart from external trademark considerations. The plausible pronunciation of Mysos and Mesos in several European languages will be nearly indistinguishable.

There is also a question about whether Oracle will be upset at a portmanteau of their trademarked MySQL name. Their public policy seems to imply that they would be unhappy with Mysos. Their public policy, however, also states that names like Mesos Launcher for MySQL or MySQL under Mesos would be fine since they are clearly nominal usages.

I'll repeat the concerns that I mentioned on the incubator general list: IMO the potential for confusion between Mysos and Mesos is a problem, especially because in several languages "Mysos" sounds very much like "Mesos" sounds in English.

This is not a trademarks or legal problem - both names belong to the ASF so we can do whatever (though confusing trademarks might be harder to enforce). But on the practical side, having such confusing names can lead to all sorts of problems [2], so IMO Mysos is not "a suitable name".

A discussion on the board@ list [1] shows that several people agree with this concern, so there's a reasonable possibility that the board would not accept a top-level project called Mysos due to this high potential for confusion.

[2] Who would call their kids "Mesos" and "Mysos"? It would be a nightmare, and projects are in a way the ASF's kids ;-)
