release:prepare fails to commit before tagging when using git 1.8.5

    Description

      When we run mvn release:prepare using git 1.8.5 the pom.xml has changes that are NOT committed and are not part of the tag.

      If we run mvn release:perform a snapshot version is deployed.

      This is caused by SCM-738.
