Input validation for repository URLs is missing rejection of 2.x style URLs

    Description

      As seen in MDEPLOY-274 the urls when given in 2.X style are leading to 401 Unauthorized errors.

      This is hard to analyze and it is not directly clear what leads to this error.

      The better approach would be to detect old-style URLs and inform the user about the changed syntax.
