Description

a mixed bag of tweaks, some of it so that stuff plays better with C1 compiler. I think its all good practice anyway... don't call random() in tight loops, remove some stupid allocations/wasted work etc.

nothing particularly exciting but there are some src/java changes so better to take a stop now before patch gets bigger.
