      Description

      Log4J logo contest

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING - we are going to choose a new logo in the coming days.

Log4j 2.0 is looking for a new logo!

After 12 years, the Log4j project is getting ready for a brand new major release: version 2.0. This new major version is a reboot of this project in many ways: it is not only time to change the version number to 2.0 but also time to refresh the Log4j logo.

Log4j 2 is very different from Log4j 1. Log4j 2 is more reliable and faster than its predecessor and comparable frameworks.

The team has grown after years of stagnation and there is now a lot of activity on our lists. We are now approaching the 2.0 release after eight beta releases.

With our new logo, we want to show the Java community that Log4j is back.

We would like to open participation to the community to create this new logo.

      HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Attach your entries to the Jira:
      https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LOG4J2-316

You can submit as many entries as you like.

You must license your Logo under the Apache License 2.0.

The contest will last one month from the date of the announcement.

UPDATE: The contest ends on 31.01.2014.

If your Logo is accepted, you must sign an ICLA:
      http://www.apache.org/licenses/icla.txt

While we will accept PNG image formats for the contest, we prefer vector based formats (SVG).

You can convert pixel-based formats produced with Gimp or Photoshop to SVG with free tools like Inkscape (http://inkscape.org)

Please note that a logo should not contain too many details.

HOW THE WINNING LOGO IS CHOSEN

We invite everyone to vote on the mailing lists. The votes of Apache Logging Committers are binding.

If the community submits more than 10 Logos, voting will proceed in two rounds.

In the first round, the 10 logos with the most +1 votes graduate to round two.

In the second round, the logo with the most +1 will win the contest.

The majority of the Apache Logging PMC can veto a logo.

We will accept the logo when all votes are successful and the ICLA of the logo contributor is on file.

Please ask questions on the dev mailing list.

Hi I am not a graphical engineer, i am a Java developer using log4j nearly a decade. Eagerly waiting for V2.0.

        Regarding the Logo-
Well java is nothing but a bean(Coffe kind). Earlier java(sun's) logo was a tea/coffee cup with steaming tea/cofee. Log4j is used for logging purpose in java programming. I am assuming everybody is aware of Tea. So at the time of preparing Tea we need a Tea-Stainer to filter tea leaf powder from the liquid tea. So if the new Log4J logo is kind of "Tea-Stainer which is filtering flow of liquid tea" will be good (I feel). It matches the purpose of Log4j too. Its been used to log the WARNING, ERRORS, DEBUG Messages.....for java programming. So assuming Java is hot liquid(like tea) we are filtering the messages from it and logging it using log4j...and the final product(tea/java program) is clean to drink(use). Hope I am able to convey my idea....

Well I am attaching one logo(found this picture in net) which seems to be matching my idea...just have a look into this. Not sure whether this photo is copyrighted or not. Please refer "log4j_idea.jpg". Thank you all.

In looking at what has been submitted so far I like the "page" with ERROR, INFO and DEBUG on it from log4j-SE.png. I also like having the cup in the page, but I would prefer the cup in the red circle (although the color doesn't have to be red) from log4j_murdy_1.png to replace the cup in log4j-SE.png. As for the text, I'd like to see it smaller than it is in both of those, but I do like the Log4j squared look. I've attached log4j-combined.png as a crude example of what I'm thinking of. I should mention that I prefer the rounded corners of the page in log4j-SE.png but I couldn't figure out how to do that in the tool I was using.

        Hi!

Please check out my mad skills (log4j-stepuk.png). I was thinking about simple and solid design without any curves or complex details. I believe that everyone who use Log4j already knows that it is a logging framework for Java and there's no reason to remind it with logo. However digit '2' should be in focus because release 2.0 is really major and important. I suppose this logo can be easily vectorized and foreground/background colors can be switched according to general web-page style.

Thanks for creating that page. It makes comparing them all much easier. Looking at them there I see a few I like.

Three proposals: a monogram of "L4J", a stack forming the letters L and J, and a coffee-cup illustration with steam forming a "log" text file/script. All early drafts.

I really like log4j_murdy_2.png, especially the square on the left. Simple, like a branding. One color. Fits in favicon and every place where you need an app icon.

For the text "Log4j" I would use another more conservative font though.

I would not include the version number in the logo. Which other brand puts a version number in the logo!? None.

I actually really like Log4j Circle - even though it doesn't look much like a circle to me.
