I just downloaded

According to the quickstart at https://james.apache.org/server/quick-start.html one of the requirements is to have Java 1.8. It took me quite some time to notice why emails were not delivered. Somewhere in the log there was a message about a crashing thread.

Switching to Java 11 helped - and was the right thing as I later found out reading https://james.apache.org/ containing

Built with Java 11 and running on the Java RE 11.
