The following has been discussed at length with Alan Choi and Steve Ross. Here's the summary:

Hive provides an option to allow newly created sub directories to automatically inherit the permissions of the parent directory. Impala should support a similar option as well. This option is needed to ensure permissions are automatically set correctly on new directories that are created as part of an insert. This is particularly useful when uses deploy Impala + Hive + Sentry.
