[HTTPCLIENT-1635] Change in the way to check stale connection in 4.4 seems to cause a lot of retry

Description

We upgraded to 4.4 and see a lot of connection failed on the first connect and then it will be fine in the retry. It seems that it didn't realize the server has terminate the old connection and still try to reuse the old connection.
