it's happening at

    MetaStoreUtils.updateUnpartitionedTableStatsFast(newtCopy,
        wh.getFileStatusesForSD(newtCopy.getSd()), false, true);

other methods in this class call getWh() to get Warehouse so this likely explains why it's intermittent.
