        Also, in the same place:

        http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/db/derby/code/trunk/java/testing/README.htm?view=co

there seems to be a spurious quotation mark in class path defined in section 2.1:

        set CLASSPATH="$

And on Mac's default bash shell, I used "export" instead of "set" and "source"-ing was necessary.

I did notice that tstjardir is where jakarta-oro and junit are installed.

It would be nice to know how to direct the logs into a directory other than from where the tests are being run.

(I ran derbylang tests with no failures reported, following the rest of the instructions. So, Rick is right, they seem to be alright, perhaps modulo some of the improvements suggested above.)

The attached patch makes the following changes:

        1) Add a description of the jardir and tstjardir convenience variables.

        2) Add a closing double quote in the set CLASSPATH statement.

        3) Simplify the suggested CLASSPATH by removing jar files that will be pulled in automatically by derbyrun.jar.

I didn't change "set" to "export" as I expect that to differ from shell to shell. (I have no idea which shell uses "set" instead of "export" or "setenv", but I guess it's good enough as an example.)

        Committed revision 1102688.

I don't think there is any way to do this currently. It might be useful functionality, but this is an old test framework that we're trying to move away from in favour of JUnit, so I doubt that anyone will put much effort into improving the framework itself going forward. There's still a long way to go before we can retire the old framework for good, though...
