We already have discussed the merge index advantages in the community.  Please find the link below.

But the feature is not completed and have some gaps like this feature is not supported for some of the features like pre-aggregate table, streaming table.

In this JIRA, Merge index feature will be completed by supporting all the existing impacted features.
