Source distributions .tar.gz and .zip should contain identical files, but in the 1.3 RC1 vote ndimiduk says there is one difference:

Do note that the contents of the two archives are not exactly identical:

$ diff --brief -r apache-calcite-1.3.0-incubating-src-tgz/
apache-calcite-1.3.0-incubating-src-zip/
Only in apache-calcite-1.3.0-incubating-src-tgz/: git.properties
