jay vyas +1 for Apache Spark 1.2.0

Just bump up version to 1.2.0? It might be sufficient. Spark 1.x is API compatible and it seems like there are no difference on project's structure between Spark 1.1.0 and 1.2.0

Steps to run and test spark-history-server:

          1) Create a log directory on HDFS:

          su -s /bin/bash hdfs -c '/usr/bin/hadoop fs -mkdir -p /var/log/spark/apps'
          su -s /bin/bash hdfs -c '/usr/bin/hadoop fs -chmod -R 1777 /var/log/spark/apps'
          su -s /bin/bash hdfs -c '/usr/bin/hadoop fs -chown spark:spark /var/log/spark/apps'

          2) Create '/etc/spark/spark-default.conf'

          cd /etc/spark/conf
          cp spark-default.conf.template spark-default.conf

          Edit the spark-default.conf:

          spark.master spark://HOSTNAME:7077
          spark.eventLog.enabled true
          spark.eventLog.dir hdfs://HOSTNAME:8020/var/log/spark/apps/

          3) Run spark examples with yarn:

          # service spark-history-server start

          export HADOOP_CONF_DIR=/etc/hadoop/conf

          spark-submit --class org.apache.spark.examples.SparkPi --deploy-mode client --master yarn /usr/lib/spark/lib/spark-examples_2.10-1.2.0.jar 2

          4) Browse the spark history server:

(UPDATE) thanks young woo. +1 .. builds cleanly, although I didn't test a live spark deploy with it, im sure we will get around to that quite soon!

          • we need to update puppet recipes to reflect this.
          • init-hdfs.sh is deprecated, so changes also should go in init-hcfs.json as well, even though its good to have updates in init-hdfs.sh as well for current bigtop (which still uses it).
          • code looks solid, tested

YoungWoo Kim before i commit, Can you create a follow up jira which guides us with regard to how the new puppet recipes shall work with the details above (i.e. the hdfs setup steps, the order of rpm dependencies to specify in the puppet manifest, etc).

Then, I will promptly commit this patch. and we can go on to finishing off 1.2 integration into the puppet recipes.

If its not too late I would like to include BIGTOP-1667 in this jira. I know It's not a good practice but BIGTOP-1667 does not have new features but some kind of clean up. so added bits are relatively small.

YoungWoo Kim can't we just update the spark groovy to call the spark examples, similar to what we do in TestHadoopExamples.groovy ? After all we are packaging the examples, and that is the convention bigtop follows in general (we only curate smoke tests if individual projects don't have good ones) .

YoungWoo, is the latest version 9 patch the final fix for upgrading Spark from 1.1 to 1.2.1? or the fix is still evolving?

Jenny MA Yes, .9 is the latest patch from me. I'm testing Spark 1.2.1 based on .9 patch. so far, it's good to me.

YoungWoo Kim okay, one final thing: a very easy rebase needs to be done for this patch to apply on top of the kafka commit.. when i tested, i was 2 commits behind .. , would you like to resubmit ? its a very easy fix, just have to merge the following lines and reupload the patch

           51 <<<<<<< HEAD
           52 <spark.version>0.9.1</spark.version>
           53 <kafka.version>0.8.1.1</kafka.version>
           54 =======
           55 <spark.version>1.2.1</spark.version>
           56 >>>>>>> BIGTOP-1648: Update to Spark 1x to Spark 1.2
           57 <phoenix.version>4.2.2</phoenix.version>

Pushed. Thanks YoungWoo Kim ! This is a big deal for us , and means that bigtop 0.9 will release with (close to) the latest spark. Also thanks alot for updating the smoke tests simultaneously.
