Description

This commit https://github.com/apache/arrow/commit/a56c009257a71979d5ed0b021197c7a9d5ed5021 changed the default behavior for some of the methods to be non-backward compatible.

Will raise the PR to revert it to previous behavior while adhering to check style guidelines.
