Description

We got a build failure (warning, but enough to draw the ire of CRAN) running on a bespoke machine configured like this: https://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/bdr/Rconfig/r-devel-linux-x86_64-fedora-clang

We test on a fedora-clang-devel image from R-hub, but it doesn't have the same flags set, so we didn't catch it.
