Description ramanal 2007-03-27 07:38:46 UTC
Spreadsheet heavy users usually have multiple sheet in a spreadsheet file. Each
sheets contains different data with different format/layout for different pusposes.

Microsoft Excel take *Zoom factor* as an *attribut of a sheet*, so you can have
different zoom factor for each sheet.

Opening the spreadsheet with Calc, all sheet will have the same zoom factor.
Which make some sheet need zoom factor adjustment each time viewed. In short,
Calc treat zoom factor as an *attribut of a spreadsheet*.

Is there any chance to make change the zoom factor behaviour?

ramanal is absolutely correct. If I were king of the world, this would be
considered a DEFECT of Calc. This one issue I hear about over and over,
usually by MS Excel lovers who snicker at OpenOffice. At my last company, it
was one of the two biggest reasons for why the bean counters would not support
OpenOffice. (The other one being the semicolon to separate arguments instead
of the comma.)

I have to agree that it IS a problem when one has a large, interrelated
workbook, perhaps with a summary on the first sheet and detail on subsequent
sheets. Coders often underestimate the importance of formatting and visual
appeal "as long as it works". But real human beings have to read spreadsheets,
and they make a lot of decisions based on them. Calculating the right number
is only part of the equation.

This issue has been noted many times before since at least 2004, but it keeps
getting (incorrectly, IMNSHO) assigned as a duplicate of Issue 30522 and then
closed. That issue is about the UI for the zoom feature, which is NOT what
ramanal is talking about. I personally don't care how pretty or intuitive the
UI for the feature is, as long as there is SOME way to do it.

If anybody knows anything about this issue and has thoughts about how to fix,
please make comments. I personally don't know where to start to fix it. If
someone who knows would at least make some notes about where the code is for
zooming and how sheet formats/attributes are stored in the document, a patch
could be written.

Hi Niklas,

please have a look at this one. The Issue mentioned in this ione is really about
making Zoom settings easier to use and not about storing the zoom factor
idependently for each sheet.
