Description joeconner 2006-09-15 21:13:54 UTC
I try to print an 9 sheet document. If I select "all" from the FILE->PRINT menu
all prints fine. BUT, if I select "selection" and list the pages 2-9 to print,
then the print fails completely. If I select "selection" and leave the default
to page 1-9 then page one ONLY prints, and 2-9 fail. I am using 2.0.4RC1 on
WinXP Pro w/SP2 and an HP LaserJet 1000 printer.

I tried to find out if this issue had been submitted before, but with over 4000
printing issues it seems too difficult to find the particular one that best fits.
Comment 1 joeconner 2006-09-16 00:17:38 UTC
I discovered it is tied to the check box FILE -> OPTIONS -> "Print only selected
sheets" as when I unchecked this box page 2-9 DID print as expected.
Comment 2 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-09-16 08:12:44 UTC
Seems to be some user error.

@joeconner:
Selection means that a selected (higlighted) area of a sheet will be printed. In
'example.odt' please select (highlight) A1:C3 by clicking on A1 and dragging
mousepointer with engaged left mouse button to C3.
Now please print "selection", and you will see that only the highlighted part
A1:C3 of sheet 1 will be printed. That's "Print Selection".

My question is: can you really change the contents of the "Pages" pane in the
print dialogue, when "selection" is checked? That would be wrong. Currently I
can not see any unexpected behaviour of OOo in your report. Do you still believe
that anything is wrong?

Pls. feel free to reopen the issue with a more detailled bug description if your
tests show that there really is something wrong with printing.
Comment 5 joeconner 2006-09-16 20:48:48 UTC
You are right about "selection." I incorrectly filled out the bug report.
Instead of my using "selection" in my comments, I should have used "pages."

I try to print an 9 sheet document. If I select "all" from the FILE->PRINT menu
all prints fine. BUT, if I select "PAGES" and list the pages 2-9 to print,
then the print fails completely. If I select PAGES" and leave the default
to page 1-9 then page one ONLY prints, and 2-9 fail. I am using 2.0.4RC1 on
WinXP Pro w/SP2 and an HP LaserJet 1000 printer.

This bug DOES still exist. It happens consistently (every time I try it).
Comment 6 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-09-17 08:18:24 UTC
checked with "2.0.4RC1 German version WIN XP: [680m3(Build9066)]" and can NOT
confirm that problem.

Steps (not) to reproduce:
1. open new spreadsheet
2. to all 3 sheets insert sheet No to A1
3. Menu "File - Print"
Information: I tried with PDF-Creator "FreePDF XP", not a "real" printer
4. Click "Pages", select "2-3"
Expected: A PDF containing sheet 2 and sheet 3 should be created
   Actual: as expected

@joeconner:
please attach a sample file!
Comment 7 joeconner 2006-09-18 17:37:10 UTC
This issue has NOTHING to do with PDF files. It is an issue for printing the
file to paper. I am attaching a file. Please note, the print fails entirely IF
you select FILE -> PRINT put radio button on PAGES, then change the 1-9 to read
2-9, click OPTIONS box, make sure both checkboxes are checked (supress output of
empty pages and print only selected sheets).
Click OK to close the options window. Click OK to print.
Print fails entirely. You SHOULD get pages 2 through 9 but nothing is produced.

User error!

@joeconner:
You should NOT get pages 2 to 9, because you checked "print only selected
sheets". That means that only selected sheets (what is something completely
different from PAGES" will be printed. I belive that you only had selected sheet
1, so that there was nothing to print.

My test with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP: [680m5(Build9011)]" and "2.0.4RC1
German version WIN XP: [680m3(Build9066)]" (both same result):
1. open 'Issue69576TEST.ods'
2. slect sheets with odd Nos. as shown in screenshot.png (mouseclick with
  <cntrl> pressed
3. Menu "File - Print - Radiobutton 'Pages' - print range 'all'
Button OPTIONS - both checkboxes checked - Button OK
4. Print with button OK
expected: all sheets with odd numbers should be printed:
             Page 1 - sheet 1 / page 2 - sheet 3 / page 3 - sheet 5 /
             Page 4 - sheet 7 / page 5 - sheet 9
   actual: as expected

New test:
11. leave odd numbered sheets selected
12. Menu "File - Print - Radiobutton 'Pages' - page selection '4-9'
Button OPTIONS - both checkboxes checked - Button OK
4. Print with button OK
expected: page 1-3 from former printout should be suppressed what means print
            contains Page 4 - sheet 7 / page 5 - sheet 9
   actual: as expected

So --> INVALID

Comment 12 joeconner 2006-09-23 04:11:42 UTC
This is NOT expected behavior.

When I perform FILE -> PRINT put radio button on PAGES, then change the 1-9 to
read 2-9, click OPTIONS box, make sure both checkboxes are checked (supress
output of empty pages and print only selected sheets).
Click OK to close the options window. Click OK to print.
Print fails entirely.

You expect to get pages 2 through 9 printed. This does not happen. You SHOULD
get pages 2 through 9 but nothing is produced. I did NOT select only page 1 to
print.

Do NOT select sheets with ODD or with EVEN numbers. I want ALL selected pages
to print.

If you experiment further with OPTIONS and uncheck the bottom box, you get a
different result (print only selected sheets).

Comment 13 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-09-23 09:00:10 UTC
@joeconner
Your "comments from joeconner Fri Sep 22 20:11:42 -0700 2006" do not conatain
anything new, especially concerning the question why you believe that you
checked selection "print only selected sheets". As long as you owe a plausible
reason the report is INVALID (and, BTW, a DUP of Issue 64469)

HELP says:
> Print only selected sheets
> Specifies that only selected sheets are
> printed, even if you choose the print range "All" in the File -
> Print dialog. If you have entered several "pages" as a print range
> in the File - Print dialog, only the pages (sheets) that have been
> selected are printed. To select a sheet, click on the sheet name on
> the bottom margin of the workspace while keeping the Ctrl key
> pressed.

Indeed that text is a little mistakable because "sheet" and "page" seem to be
used synonymous, (but they are not, please also see Issue 69794), what might
have caused your misunderstanding. But the important message is "To select a
sheet, click on the sheet name on the bottom margin of the workspace while
keeping the Ctrl key pressed."

Did you really select the sheets you wanted to print?

If that selection is unchecked, you will get your pages 2-9 printed as you
expect, but if you activate the additional filter "print only selected sheets",
this filter will suppress print of all unselected sheets (in my 'screenshot.png'
you see the difference between selected and unselected sheets.

Please prove comprehensible that print _of_selected_sheets_ fails, or I will
have to close this issue again.
Comment 14 Rainer Bielefeld 2006-09-27 06:12:16 UTC
Closed again, all works "as designed".

@joeconner:
If you find some other misleading HELP comments, please open a new issue similar
to Issue 69794; if you believe that the current behaviour is not optimum, please
open an ENHANCEMENT issue with a well founded explanatory statement.
Comment 15 andreschnabel 2007-08-25 20:37:40 UTC
reopened and confirmed in OOG680m2 (upcoming 2.3)

as "print only selected sheets" is enabled by default in OOo 2.3, this becomes
a serious defect.

The situation is as follows:
- given a spreadsheet with 3 sheets,
- having content on each sheet,
- print preview will show 3 pages.
- Print dialog will offer pages 1-3 as page range
- in print dialog enable "pages"
- define page 3 to be printed

result:
an empty page will be printed

Expegted behaviour is, that either
- the thrid page is printed (ignoring "selected sheets only" setting)
or
- print preview and print dialog show only the pages that would really be
printed (one page, that maps to the selected sheet in this case)

andreschnabel->oc:
please have a look, how to proceed (if it is better to file a new issue, as this
one is already bloated)
Comment 16 andreschnabel 2007-08-25 21:03:17 UTC
set to new
Comment 17 Rainer Bielefeld 2007-08-25 21:30:55 UTC
Agree, with that "invisible" default that becomes annoying.
I also found some new unexpected behaviour concerning these pint issues in my
2.2.1 and "2.3.0 Dev. Snapshot WIN XP: [680m222(Build9183)]", but today it's
too late for further tests.
Comment 18 frank 2007-08-27 11:39:39 UTC
I take over here as I'm a member of the usability iTeam which made the decision
to set print only selected sheets to enabled.

Comment 19 mmenaz 2007-08-27 12:56:00 UTC
To "fst": set print only selected sheets to enabled was the right decision,
thanks a lot! I had to be ashamed too many times because of this "bizarre" calc
behaviour.
The problem now is only that OOo code" is/was/has ever been" broken and now is
much more evident. Preivew and actual printing should work THE SAME, since the
goal of preview is the possibility if look at documents exactly how will be
printed. So if I see 2 page in preview, print dialog should show "1-2" range
(and not 1-14) and I must have the possibility of print the last page telling
"2", since is the last of the preview. In short, WYSIWYG. Please fix it for 2.3
release, otherwise we will have a LOT of troubles and backfire from users, OMHO.
Comment 20 frank 2007-08-27 13:25:11 UTC
Hi,

not a bug. The decision was made to act as Excel with it's default settings will
act. So this is a compatibility Issue with Excel users. It seems possible to
make the Print dialog more useful. This is Issue 80588 .

I close this Issue as double to it for keeping an eye on both Issues.

Comment 22 andreschnabel 2007-08-27 17:48:25 UTC
reopened, as this is a bug in Calc ... Excel behaves as expected.

So this issue should be fixed for the reason of interoperability.

To verify please do the following in Excel:
- create a new Spreadsheed (that contains three sheets by default)
- type some text in the first cell of each sheet
- open page previev
-> Excel will display Page 1 of 1 (means it will display of the current table
only, while Calc will display content of all sheets)

- open the print dialog
- enter pages 3 to 3 as printing range (Calc offers to print pages 1-3 as
default in this situation)
- print
-> Excel will give an error message, that there is nothing to print in the
current print range (Calc prints an empty page in this situation).

The decision to make "print only selected sheets"the default in calc was right -
I am not criticising this. But this does not change the fact, Calc behaviour in
the above named situations is defect.

Hi Thomas,

as discussed this one is for you. It's about extending the warning for empty
printranges to not available pages.

Comment 24 deaconctk 2007-09-29 19:59:10 UTC
This defect report has clearly taken on a life of it's own. There has clearly
been some confusion with terminology and misunderstanding of just what "Print
only selected sheets" means. Nonetheless, it is quite valid. (For what it's
worth, this behavior does NOT match Excel's processing--unless MS has recently
changed Excel's behavior).

This issue is related to, but not quite a duplicate of, issue 82071.

I concur with andreschnabel that as of 2.3.0, this issue should now be
considered high priority as this defect is now default behavior. Prior to
2.3.0, this defect was only seen if the user went out of his way to modify the
defaults.

Also, I beg to differ with the suggestion that this is "...about extending the
warning for empty printranges to not available pages." That is part of it, but
the print dialog itself should not default to 1-9 when the "Print only selected
sheets" is checked and the selected sheet is only a single page.

Issue 80588 is not a duplicate of this issue either. However, discoleo's
proposed change to the print dialog (see issue 80588) would help to mitigate
this issue. Though matching Excel's GUI is not my personal goal, the proposed
print dialog would be closer to Excel's and would improve useability.
