Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 6336
Preselection of default values
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:32:30 UTC
Values in several dialogs are not preselected. This makes it a tick to slow to change them, because you have to select them first.
UHE->FT: Please have a look, thanks !
ehm .... am I the only one who does not understand this bug?
Frank, Take a look at http://ui.openoffice.org/protocols/protocol_2002-07-04.html chapter 2.1
ah! Thanks, Daniel. I apologize for not knowing this (still did not read all protocols from my 3-week-vacation), but I admit I would have said something, anyway. A bug description which can be understood by insiders only is useless, sorry :) Frank
changing target to 2.0 Vince, sorry, 1.0.2 is simply unrealistic (not only because it's already out, but also because such a change is too large for a product update, and this is what x.y.? versions are).
FT: Sorry, but the initial request is plain invalid. Which dialogues are meant? What kind of dialogues are meant? Why one want to change them whereto? What kind of selection is done (mouse, keyboard)? Under which circumstances this happens? Sorry guys, but this I close this one as invalid. Please feel free to re-state this issue but with a full-blown description (see my questions above). Thx.

As Falko requested, I'll provide a more detailed description now. It doesn't matter which dialog you choose, it happens in every dialog which has a field where you are proposed to enter a text. Selection in this comment means, that text is highlighted (usually inverted) and deleted as soon as a key is pressed. I'm addressing the so called power user, ie people who want to have their work done ... fast. Thus I focus on and refer to good UI behaviour of other applications. To illustrate the use of the requested feature, take a look at these examples: You use OOWriter and want to change the font. If the dialog appears, nothing is selected. To choose another font, you have to do the following: - mark current font name - type new font name - move to the list - select font - press tab to continue or enter to close This is awesome. The dialogs I know so far provide the following behaviour: - type unique letters of new font name - tab or enter The reason, why it's easier is simple: The entry is preselected (highlighted) and automatically deleted when the letters are typed. The same happens if you change cell width or height in Calc and in almost all other dialogs too. If you need further examples or didn't get my point, just let me know. Cheers, Vince ''' ô¿ô -
When selecting a dropdown listbox (like font selection in Writer) the whole list box entry should get selected (instead of just putting the cursor there). Example: A user wants to change the font he currently uses in his Writer doc. Now he points the cursor into the font selection drop down listbox. If automatically everything would be selected it would be easy just to type in the name of the new desired font (and autocompleted).
