Description mmenaz 2005-10-08 17:10:18 UTC
I've Excel files that I have converted with the conversion wizard. Some of the
sheets cells have refences to another file, i.e.:
='file:///smbshare/Documents/2005_06/pieni.XLS'#$PIENI.$F$9
Even if in principle there could be the chance that one uses the wizard to
convert the "master" file without converting also the "related" ones, I think
that this is VERY unlikely (and if not, it could convert the single "master"
file just saving it in OpenDoc format, without the wizard).
In addition, the wizard, and I like it, creates the converted file with a
lowercase extensions, even if the "source" file has it uppercase (and I've many
files like that). I'm not only abandoning M$ Office, but M$ Windows as well in
the client side (done years ago in the server one), so I will access files
inside windows and no more samba, so using a case-sensitive filesystem (oh, I do
hate case-sensitive filesystem!).
So I ask that the wizard take care of looking in the cells that have a reference
to an external file, and rename the reference with .ods instead of .xls or .XLS
(or whatever case it founds).
Having to do it by hand is very time consuming if you have many spreadsheets
with such references like I have (around 600).
As stated in previous issues I've raised, these are difficoults I'm facing now
that I'm converting all my files into OpenDocument format, and I really think
they should be take in high consideration to facilitate migration (i.e. for
Massachusetts ;))

one for requiremets.

IMHO the costs for this doesn't match the outcome. So this should be a wontfix
Issue.

There are additional problems:
if you rename the link by hand you still have:
a) the link with the .XLS file is still there (see: edit -> link), it should be
automatically removed also by the wizard
b) the "hidden sheet" is there (the one formed with the .XLS file), so this also
has to be removed (Format -> Sheet -> Show, right click on the tab and delete)
c) if you change case of the file name you reference to, i.e. from uppercase to
lowercase, the link is not updated (I've to file a separate issue about that),
but the reference in the formula is automatically uppercase. The file is not
found, since lowercase, and the value is set to 0, instead of give an error
Frank states that "IMHO the costs for this doesn't match the outcome. So this
should be a wontfix Issue.". This only means that he has no Excel files to
convert. If developers instead lissen to users, and really want OOo adoption,
should fix it ASAP.
An average office has thousand of files to convert before removing M$Office (I
had 6487), so OOo can't leave on the "do it by hand" of the user what can easely
be automated by the conversion wizard, is totally non-sense.
