Description andree 2002-05-14 22:52:46 UTC
When trying to print in OO1.0, I'm getting an error popup with the
following message:

 ______________________________________
|OpenOffice.org 1.0 |_|-|X|
|-------------------------------------|
| ____ |
| / \ No default printer found. |
| | \/ | Please choose a printer |
| | /\ | and try again. |
| \____/ |
| |
| <Ok> |
 -------------------------------------

This happens consistenty when going 'File->Print...' or 'File->Printer
Settings...' or pressing the Print icon in the Function Bar. I have
tried rebooting, also in combination with changing the printer. I tried
a network printer as default, a local printer (not connected) and a PDF
printer (setup with GhostScript and RedMon). Nothing worked with exactly
one exception: After one reboot and with the PDF printer set as default,
a printer dialog did actually appear. Closing it and trying again gave
the described behaviour again.

I have a number of printers setup some of which are local and some of
which a network printers.

Printing from other applications works fine. Of course one of the
printers is ticked as deffault (not sure whether you can somehow avoid
this at all).

All this is on a w2kSP2 machine. The machine is part of a domain run by
a Samba 2.3a server on Debian woody acting as PDC, file & print server.
Roaming is active and user specific OO setup information is stored
under Documents & Settings ie. it is part of the roaming profile.

I was unable to find anything about this either in the OO mailing list archives
or in IssueZilla, so it doesn;t actually seem to be a common problem. I looked
in groups.google.com as well and found a pointer to a SUN knowledgebase article
that claimed this could happen if win.ini is corrupt. Setting the default
printer to another printer an back is supposed to fix the problem. Unfortuantely
it didn;t work for me. (I can't find the article again and didn't write down
the number :-()

If there is any other information you require please let me know. I'm trying to
introduce OO to our company and this is somewhat stopping me dead...

Thanks a lot for your time & best regards
Andree

Just a few additional details:

o I tried with same and different user on different machine (also
belonging to the domain) with the same result, ie. the above error.

o I originally expereinced this in Calc so I gave Writer a go. At first
it looked promising. The printer dialog popped-up allowing me to select
a printer. After clicking ok to confirm printing nothing happened, ie
it didn't print. Trying again resulted in the the above error again.

Cheers
Andree

TM->HI: Please have a look at this printer-problem. Thanks !

Can not reproduce it with OpenOffice1.0 or else version.
Please reinstall the print driver from your default printer. It seems
to be, that OO doesn't get the right information from the system.

I got this error first after installing SP2 and several
other minor updates for Windows 2000. Before that
printing wasn't a problem.

I got this error if I
created a new text document or opened an existing. But if
I saved this document in another format (I tried rtf),
opened this file and saved back in OO-Writer format, this
error didn't occur anymore for this sxw-file. If I
changed the default printer in windows, the old (now non-
default) printer was selected when I opened the printer
settings dialog box in OO-Writer for this file (in the
status field this was properly recognized). Now if I
changed the printer in this dialog box and called print,
I got this error message "No default printer found"
again. If I wanted to go back to printer settings, I
couldn't open the dialog box again, instead I got this
error too. If I saved such a file and reopened it, I got
this error message when I called print or printer
settings.

I was playing a little bit with that and - i
don't know why - the error didn't appear anymore. Now I can
create and open _every_ sxw-file, I can change the
printer and I can print.

Regards
Gert

I recently got this same problem with 1.0.1 and the exact situation
when this happens seems to be:

+ you used a network printer the last time you printed
+ that printer is now off-line/unreachable
(+ double clicking that particular printer in Windows'
Setting menu also shows an error message - this could
   be a non-essential trait, though)

It looks like OOo remembers the printer you used last time and tries
to select it from the dropdown list by default (regardless of
*Windows'* "default printer" settings).

If, however, the printer is unreachable, OOo displays the error
message described in the first post, but doesn't let the use choose
another printer since after you close the message box, printing
dialog never appears.

IMO, if the default printer is unreachable, OOo should try the next
one on the list instead of displaying an error message and just show
an empty combo box and disable the "print" button if there are no
active printers left in the end.

As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved
<wontfix/duplicate/worksforme/invalid> issues. Please see this posting for
details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.
