Description cantastorie 2004-07-09 19:23:31 UTC
The function of exporting pdf doesn't produce pdf accessible to disabled people.
Even if the source document is well structured the resulting pdf does not
mantain a good structure when accessed by a screen reader, there is no
possibility to add an alternative text in images and so on...
Some useful resources about this problem:

we will work on tagged pdf and links for 2.0 which should help a lot already.
More enhancements need to be scheduled later due to limited ressources.

I imagine much of the issues mentioned in this bug have been addressed since it
was last touched in 2005. Can anyone update the status of this bug?

Actually not much. tagged PDF is in, links are also (which does not actually
have anything to do with accessible PDF). Before we can do accessible PDF we
need the applications to support UI in which the user can enter replacement text
for graphics; which would mean that these feature also have to become part of ODF.

Reset assignee on issues not touched by assignee in more than 2000 days.
Comment 7 Christophe Strobbe 2013-08-06 19:18:10 UTC
Note: ISO 14289-1:2012 is the first part of a standard on PDF's accessibility features. Perhaps more useful is the technical implementation guide at http://www.aiim.org/Research-and-Publications/standards/committees/PDFUA/Technical-Implementation-Guide.

I think this bug was submitted before OpenOffice could export tagged PDF, and this feature has been available for quite some time now. So I see two ways to proceed with this bug:
* we close it because OpenOffice supports exporting to tagged PDF (and ODF has accessibility features, and AOO has UI for text alternatives etc);
* we recycle it as a metabug for other issues related to PDF accessibility.

The following issues are also about PDF accessibility:
* 49654: Missing language information in exported pdf
* 52852: Objects from master slides should be tagged as artifacts in PDF output
* 75826: Improvement of tag structure when exporting a document as pdf [Impress]
* 93940: Export as PDF should default to tagged PDF/A-1
* 102960: Support for document Tab order when exporting to PDF
* 105115: Turn on accessibility tags in exported PDF by default
* 122965: ACCESSIBILITY: Impress PDF export loses image Title and Description
