Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 28125
grouping feature does not group imported images to drawing components
Last modified: 2019-05-21 14:04:10 UTC
The grouping feature does not group imported images to drawing components. 1) Create a drawing component (e.g. text box) 2) Insert -> Graphics -> From File (choose a picture) 3) Try to select BOTH drawing component(s) AND picture by mouse-selecting (click, then drag using the drawing tool-looks like a cursor ;) OR using the shift to select the components. --> this does not appear to be possible, and therefore the "group" option is NOT available. A sample document with this problem is available here: --> http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~ofjs102/oo/groupProblem.sxw Example of where this might be useful: Creating a document "Figure": > text box containing "Fig. 1.1", > an imported image, > a box to "contain" the other elements (a border). {once grouped, the whole object can be moved as one)
confirming with 1.1.1 linux build

HI->BH: Useful feature I think.
HI, Grouping never worked in Writer. The workaround is to copy-paste the-to-be-grouped objects into Draw, group them and copy-paste them back to Writer. There the group can be entered and editet and ungrouped again. Just the grouping in word is buggy. Also shift select doesn't work correctly in Writer. It does in Draw and Impress.

it is not only a problem with the capability of grouping but also with INSERTING objects which are grouped. my chart (see 35535) gets its fontsize changed (which basically makes it useless) and it can NOT be cut and reinserted into calc.

Grouping several objects would be nice, but what if you just want to move them to another page. You have to move them one at a time. How about at least allowing selection of several, possibly dissimilar, objects to do something with them together?
This bug still exists in OOo 3.0. Even the documentation mentions that Writer can do grouping in "Working with Groups", but its method of shift-clicking to select multiple objects/images doesn't work at all.
Since the documentation says this works, shouldn't this be treated as a bug, not an enhancement request? I spent a long time pulling out my hair trying to get this to work before I discovered it was impossible.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".

Being open since 2004 doens't smell good.

I can confirm this bug on AOO411m6(Build:9775) - Rev. 1617669 2014-08-13 09:23 - Linux x86_64 It's unbelievable that enterprise-grade text processor does not support grouping of images with drawing objects. This works as expected in MS Word 2003 (released 11 years ago), but not in modern AOO and LO (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37960).
Still a problem in 2019
