Description Unknown 2003-07-02 15:26:49 UTC
Cannot import Word v. X .doc documents into oo1.0.3 on a Mac G4/733MHz/1Gb/10.2.6
and have the Greek symbols appear as anything other than rectangles. The Symbol font in
the WYSIWYG menu on the tool bar also appears with rectangles. Default printer (HP
LaserJet4M) is set and does work fine outside of oo to print Greek.

If this is not the correct place to submit this problem, please advise. Could not find an
answer in the mailing list discussions.

Please try using the latest OOo 1.1 Rc5,
Your version already old enough, and many bug fixes since your version
and 1.1 RC5. If the problem still happend in 1.1 RC5 please report back

Please Attach the documents which make this problem, so we can test
it/faster to confirm.
(Without the documents, we cannot confirm the problem easily/need more
time)
Don't forget to cut other part of the documents, so the file size is
small, but we still able to see the problem.

Added oooqa keyword.

OOo 1.1rc5 is not available yet for Mac OS X, unless you build it
yourself.

But to answer the question, yes it appears that using the
OpenSymbol font in OOo 1.0.3GM does result in square boxes
appearing. I haven't checked OOo 1.1rc5 yet.

And I agree - having specific documents to test with helps a lot.

I've tested the 1.1 on Sparc and it works quite fine. Please note that
OpenSymbol does not contain Latin characters. It's therefor not a big
surprise that it didn't work on 1.0.x. You need to use the "Insert ->
Special Character" dialog to insert symbols.

please provide test documents that show the problem with 1.1,
otherwise I will close this one as it worksforme.
Comment 7 Unknown 2003-10-08 17:41:46 UTC
Insert/special character worked to insert Greek (symbol) text with oo1.0.3 on my
PowerMac G4/733 MHz/1Gb RAM/OS 10.2.6. However, this does not eliminate the
need, in my opinion, to incorporate into the next release the ability to:

1. Import Word X text containing Greek symbols into oo and have the symbols
rendered properly.

2. Insert Greek symbols into text simply by selected symbol from the font menu.
Comment 8 christof.pintaske 2003-10-09 14:04:52 UTC
doesn't work on the 1.1 for Mac.
Comment 9 christof.pintaske 2003-10-09 14:29:59 UTC
works on Sparc but does not work on Mac (I used the English 1.1 from
oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/MacOSXrc)

simply create some dummy text and assign OpenSymbol to it. You'll see
squares. The characters shall get replaced with those out of Vera.

This defect can also be seen in Fedora's release of OpenOffice.org
1.1.0, and in the Debian patched version of OOo 1.1.0-02.

Behaviour: Symbol font is just blank. Select Symbol font, type
characters from the keyboard, and nothing is displayed.

N/B: Both of these have the Ximian OOo patches.
Comment 11 acizmeli 2004-10-26 05:39:35 UTC
I have just upgraded to 1.1.3 from 1.1.2 and suddenly my greek letters coded
with the font Symbol started to appear blank. The charaters however display
correctly in the page preview or the exported PDF file. The source .sxw file had
been created in 1.1.2.

Please find attached the outputs of the xdpyinfo , xset -q and chkfontpath
commands.

I use EduLinux which is based on Mandrake 10.0.

Hope this helps solving the issue
Let me know if can be of any further assistance
cheers
Servet

Greetigs, It seems this issue contains descriptions for several problems for
different platforms. Dan, are you going to work on this issue in the 2.0
timeframe Martin described on releases?
http://development.openoffice.org/releases/OpenOffice_org_2_x.html

If not I would at least like to change the target milestone. But the issue
needs some clarifications anyway.
Thanks, Stefan

Is this Linux/PPC issue?

teplow: please insert sample document and screenshot how it looks like.

I had long been told that the inability to properly import "Greek" text and
bullets from MS Word was an OOo-wide issue, but this seems to the the only
relevant issue in IssueZilla, so perhaps this is a Mac-only issue.

When OOo imports MS Word documents, the Greek symbols turn into boxes (as do
some of the bullets) and changing fonts (eg. OpenSymbol) does nothing to make
them readable (i.e., they are being imported with the wrong codepoints assigned).

Attached is an MS Word 2001 (shares file format with Word 97/2000/XP) document
with some lines of text in Greek and also an outline; the first-level bullet
appears as a box (as does all of the Greek text).

This problem is present in both 1.1.4 and 1.9.107 on Mac OS X 10.3.9 and is a
great annoyance to Mac users in the sciences. ccing ericb in case this turns
out to be a Mac-only issue--plus he can test LinuxPPC :)

Any chance of giving this a higher priority? I'm really happy with the native
version of OpenOffice (I'm currently running 3.0 RC 3) on OS X 10.5, but this is
a really frustrating problem for me.

At work, we almost all use OpenOffice, but I occasionally get documents from
customers that were created in Microsoft Word containing mathematical equations
using greek symbols like β or τ. These get rendered in OpenOffice as other
characters from the symbol font, usually making the equations completely unreadable.
