Steps how to reproduce Reproducible with "AOO 4.0.1 – German UI / German locale [Rev. 1524958 2013-09-20 11:40:29]" on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", “historic” 4.0 User Profile used for all predecessor versions:

1. From AOO Start Center open attached "SampleOverwrite.ods"
2. Dobue click cell B7
   > Formula appears with colored cell references
3. Click to any position within the formula except behind last character
   > Caret flashes within formula
5. <Insert> key
  > formula now shown with black color reference cell cursors A1:A3 vanish
Bug: Character of formla at caret position no longer visible :-(

Additional info:
(a) Very old bug already in OOo 1.1.5
(b) Only appears in colored references view. If you proceed steps with an
   additional step
   4. <leftarrow><rightarrow>
      > Formula changes to black and white view
      > The problem does not appear
(c) LibO 4.2 still affected
(d) no problem with normal cell contents (you can try in other cells)
Comment 1 Rainer Bielefeld 2013-10-26 08:47:45 UTC
(e) Latest confirmation for AOO 4.1.0-dev, but because of incomplete
LCo selector (Bug 123063) no correct information can be left.
Comment 2 Rainer Bielefeld 2013-10-26 08:55:08 UTC
(f) Not reproducible with LibO 3.5 on Ubuntu 11 (VirtualBox),
there character remains in some light grey.
(g) I wonder wheter there is a
WIN workaround with color or Theme of contrast or whatever setting.

step 2 - B7 is empty... ?
Comment 4 Rainer Bielefeld 2013-10-27 06:24:23 UTC
Correction for Original report Step 2:

Wrong: Dobue click cell B7
Correct: Double click cell B4
Comment 5 Rainer Bielefeld 2013-10-27 07:27:19 UTC
I think the bug has 2 elements:
(h) As long as the flashing overwrite caret rectangle is visible, the visible
color of a dark color (blue) character at it's place should change to a
bright color (yellow), and change back to normal color for the part of
the flashing period where the caret is invisible. This does not work
at all on WIN (it seems that visible color of character switches to
"permanently white" when "overwrite" becomes switched on, but does work more
or less on Linux (can someone check with my new sample?)
(i) Any change of visible character color should be undone when caret has moved
away. This does not work on WIN and does not work on Linux.
(k) so may be we should split this report into 2 ones: original one for (h) and
    a separate one for (k)?

Please do also tests in cell C4. With WIN I see a permanent change to
  visible character color = white
when I proceed test similar to test in original report.

Behavior should be:
White when caret rectangle = on,
original color when caret rectangle = off.

As given in description and comment 4.
