Description davide 2012-12-13 15:48:54 UTC
There is a blocking incompatibility between AOO and Novell client on Windows desktop.

When I try to install or execute AOO on Windows running a Novell client, the execution fails.
This doesn't happen if the client is installed but not active (i.e. running without accessing to Novell client).

The bug is well explained here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44588

It seems that LibreOffice, starting from 3.5.2 or 3.5.3, solved the issue.

Hi guys, I opened bug 44588 (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44588) and proposed its closure.

We did some more testing and I think we found the real cause (NOT related to Novell Client or OS version).

Our Novell client, during start-up script, was setting a system wide variable called "DATA". We changed now its name to something different (GGMMAA) ... et voilà ... problems disappeared.

I think that in Libreoffice 3.5.3 or later there is no use/check of this variable, while in Apache OpenOffice it is still "used" somehow.

Bye.

Ah, the infamous $DATA variable... Yes, indeed for some reason setting a variable named DATA may interfere with OpenOffice. It's an old bug that you can find well described here
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg13233.html
and fixed here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42961

I'm closing this bug report since it doesn't describe the problem. However, I opened a new one about the DATA bug: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121623
