i have the same problem, i cant even get part way through creating a presentation using a template

Looks like that you are hit by a known issue - look at the known issues section in the release notes http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html

Upgrading a former OOo may causes such problems - have a look at comment 7 of bug 121625 for a workaround and also to the forum - link given in the known issues section - to solve the problem.
