File damaged by recovery

(The system is Vista SP2, running OO 3.4.1)

How to reproduce:

- Start Open Office Calc.

- Save workspace as "CrashTest.ods"

- From Task Manager kill Open Office (soffice.exe/bin -- one of each). This simulates a system crash/power loss/Win Update reboot.

- Double click on the saved "CrashTest.ods" in Explorer.

- OO puts up a message that recovery will occur -- allow it.

- When the Calc window comes up, don't touch it -- just wait about 10 seconds.

- Calc window closes and OO puts up a message that recovery will occur -- from now on the sequence will repeat.

If the file is opened with Excel it will be reported as containing errors (which doesn't happen if recovery has not occurred this way). The "recovery" is corrupting the file.

If this were just an occasional problem it would be one thing, but it's easily reproduced -- any "recovery" damages the ods file.

OO 3.4.1 on Windows 7 64bit

Followed Dan's steps using his test .ods file and was not able to replicate the bug in OO. I was able to replicate the claim he made about Excel reporting that the file has errors. My exact steps are the same as his.

-I would go and create a new .ods file and save it to the desktop.

-Then I would end task soffice.exe/bin in task manager.

-Afterward, I would open the file I just created and it would come up in recovery manager.

-I would continue through it and the file would work fine afterward.

I did this a few times with different data in the files including no data as in the original and still couldn't reproduce the error in OO. I uploaded a image of the error I get when opening with Excel as thisseems to be more of an issue.

Error when opening with Excel
Comment 3 Dan 2012-10-03 03:00:24 UTC
Did you wait 10 seconds (maybe longer) after the "recovered" file came up? The crash does not occur immediately. (In fact, it appears to be triggered by some sort of timer.)

When using either WinXP or Win7HP, with all updates and servicepacks installed, Calc will not open again anymore after closing the spreadsheet. Not even when forcing the files soffice.bin and soffice.exe to close. In most cases, the computer has to be restarted completely to maybe open OpenOffice again. The files that are opened are .ods files, made with OpenOffice.

I can not reproduce the crash on Windows7 (and waited for about 15 minutes).

Hm...
May be this has nothing do to with the recovery.
May be are hit by the known issue when installing AOO 3.4.x as an upgrade of a former OOo version - release notes, section known issues [1]

Can you please start the office and perform the update check via Menu Help - Check for Updates... ?
Does the office crashes?
If yes, you were hit by this known issues which is fixed for AOO 4.0

ALG: Tried on all three systems, could not reproduce that loop on any of them.
Comment 9 Dan 2013-07-06 00:55:39 UTC
Writer reports "OpenOffice.org 3.4.1 is up to date."

Can't check under Calc since it crashes (with empty document) before the check can occur.

remove showstopper request

Proplem can't be reproduced and needs further investigation or more detailed information of the environment
