The example is copied from the help files.
According to menu:View>"Highlight Values" all the input values are numbers.
DSUM returns zero in all versions of OOo, LibO and even when I load it as xls into Gnumeric.
Everything works normally when I fill arbitrary data into the empty cells of the criteria range and then restore the original state again (Grade=2).

The search criteria for field "age" and "Distance to School" contain a space character. That space character does not match any row in the database, therefore the sum is zero.
Remove the space characters to make the cells empty and DSUM works as expected.

Tip: Use Find&Replace with 'Find All' with a space character in 'Search for' and checked 'Entire cells' to mark all those cells which contain such-otherwise not visible-space character.
