Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 116170
ACC: DOC and DOCX Alternative text (Alt text) of image lost when importing
Last modified: 2014-04-28 09:21:45 UTC
When importing a document (.doc) created with MS Word (2003 or 2007 at least), the alternative text assigned to the image in Word is lost when imported to OpenOffice. This is still true in OOo 3.2.1. In Word 2007, insert an image. right click and select 'size' Enter text on the "Alt text" tab. Save the document. Open in OOo, right click on picture, select "Picture..." and the alternative text is missing.

The alternative text of a graphic won't be imported from .doc or docx format. In Writer this information can be found in Graphic properties / Options tab.
Correct. The alt text needs to be imported (and exported) properly, both for compatibility and for accessibility reasons.
*** Issue 124164 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
Resetting assignee to default This mishandling of alternate text for embedded graphics images results in poor fidelity with Assistive Technology tools that depend on the alternate text descriptions of graphics to fully render document content. Import filter for DOC and DOCX needs to correctly parse the alternate text and assign it to the Picture --> Options --> Alternative (Text Only) attribute of the ODF .odt format.
This issue has also been confirmed for OpenOffice 4.0.1 for Mac OS by Greg Kraus: http://accessibility.oit.ncsu.edu/blog/2014/04/18/the-pain-of-accessible-pdfs-from-ms-word-on-mac-test-results/.
