I see that a query was raised back in 2005 (44934) about the unavailability of gradients as background in 
Writer tables. I guess my query is related.
I'd like to be able to use gradients as backgrounds in Calc cells. At present I can only do it by the rather 
tedious workaround of creating a rectangular graphic with a gradient fill and then using that as a graphics 
background

IMHO useless in a spreadsheet.
