Description

The current Unix build architecture is controlled by a custom
runConfigure script for constructing the project Makefiles.

The new GNU AutoTools infrastructure can do this in a
common way using Makefile.am and Configure.ac files to
construct a consistent package build and install interface.
The tools should automatically identify the proper architecture
and compilers needed for a successful build.

The Xerces-C XML Parser project has already done the migration
for their C/C++ code base, started with version 3.0.
