        is there some solid documentation about this ?

        If you run maven 2.0.9 it will print out deprecation warnings for $

        {version}

        .

        I believe the documentation is at http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAVENUSER/MavenPropertiesGuide

        The site is down at the moment though.

        Looking at the google cache information on the page:

        $

        {version}

        equivalent to $

        {project.version}

        or $

        {pom.version}

        All elements in the pom.xml, can be referenced with the project. prefix or using pom. as prefix

        So pom and project are interchangeable, either should be fine.
