Although technically one could apply this patch to trunk yet not to 1.0, Greg
has stated that he has no intention of doing so, since he doesn't want the trunk
to diverge with such an API change so early. (FWIW, I agree.) This issue isn't
to decide the question of whether or not it should go into 1.0; it's just to
provide a convenient place to gather information, so we have something to refer
to when discussing.
