      Description

This issue was original a scratch pad for various ideas for new Logos. It is now being used as a repository for submissions for the Solr Logo Contest...

      http://wiki.apache.org/solr/LogoContest

Note that many of the images currently attached are not eligible for the contest since they do not meet the official guidelines for new Apache project logos (in particular that the full project name "Apache Solr" must be included in the Logo). Only eligible attachments will be included in the official voting.

I like the version without the crescent. The crescent makes me think Moon, which makes no sense in Sol(a)r context. I'm not in love with the "robotic" font. The Sun is a source of life on planet Earth, so I'd personally prefer gentler, more oval and more human-feeling font.

I took the contents of the zip file and made a logo without the crescent, but with an 'o' that has the diffused rays where the crescent used to be.

In the new zip are a full size version, an original logo sized version, and a new cropped version.

The rounded characters are nice. The sun's red color and open middle aren't so nice IMHO.

Erik: perhaps an animated gif that fires out from the Solr's "o" and engulfs our planet?

I dig the version Ryan posted ... the rounded letters really make a huge differnece – as for the colors of the sun, i think that red is a bit too ... red. I think the color palate of the current Solr logo would look better.

The white in the center of the "o" makes it an obvious "o", but a less obvious sun ... which made me think about the "o" in previous versions. I think a solid orange circle would make a good Sun/"o", and in the context of the other letters would be an obvious character ... it could then have a radiating gradient or light orange to yellow ... it seems like that owuld be a good balance between the two designs posted so far.

one other personal opinion: with teh crescnet, the "r" looks okay, but without it, we probably want to narrow it a bit – it sticks way out there.

As for a logo for "Flare" ... i think resusing the current "Solr on fire" logo might be perfect

I like the more muted colors and larger O size of "e" ... but i still think having a sun/O with a solid (non white) center might look better.

as far as letter sizing ... i think the r really needs to be narrower – it currently sticks outway to far to the right.

the s and the r should probably either be the same height, or the s should be significantly taller (ie; capitalized)

Attached solr.s1.jpg – variation of "logo-solr-d.jpg", the white center of the O allows resizing smaller without using red. Concept is consistent height and thinner S. Used capital L to avoid confusion with I vowel. Kept the lowercase R; a capital R destroys the simplicity. I like the rounded corners, although they disappear at smaller sizes. (Use half-circles for all ends?)

Logo must include "Apache". Added as white text inside the S. Disappears at smaller sizes so we may need two versions to meet this requirement at small sizes.

Solr is for the "enterprise" and needs a logo acceptable to large companies. IMO, none of the logos with flames meet this standard.

Concept is consistent height and thinner S. Used capital L to avoid confusion with I vowel. Kept the lowercase R; a capital R destroys the simplicity. I like the rounded corners, although they disappear at smaller sizes. (Use half-circles for all ends?) Logo must include "Apache". Added as white text inside the S. Disappears at smaller sizes so we may need two versions to meet this requirement at small sizes. Solr is for the "enterprise" and needs a logo acceptable to large companies. IMO, none of the logos with flames meet this standard.

          1. Delete the slogan. Logos do not include taglines.
          2. Fix the O to appear as a complete circle. The current version reads SULR.

It should be possible to scale the logo, or a salient part of it, as small as a favicon (16x16) and still have it easily recognized. Most of the designs above require a lot of pixels to be recognizable. A good logo should be iconic more than textual--an abstract symbol.

Often you can sample an element of a logo to form a favicon (like we do with Lucene's 'L'). So, when voting, think about whether there's an easily identifiable sample (e.g., is the typeface of the 'S' distinctive?).

I note that Steve Stedman did not provide his logos under the Apache license. Was that intentional? I like his quite a lot...

The PRC requires that there be a scalable "vector" format for official logos so the can be reproduced at any size.

for the contest we're not requiring that people submit a vector version, but "if your entry is selected to be the new Solr Log you must provide the "scalable vector, print quality version of the logo" prior to the selecting being official."

Dooh – I know we should have discussed this more when setting the "rules".

I think more variations are good – I think selecting a family, then refining that is a good option. On: http://wiki.apache.org/solr/LogoContest, I grouped things into the 'families' that I think should count as the same 'vote'

The one hitch would be that if someone votes for multiple items in the same 'family' it could skew the stats – in that case, I suggest we ask the person to recast their 'vote' (it is a public ballot after all)

In particular, I like the logo:

but would love to see a different font, with perhaps a different treatment of "apache". Maybe the flame on the "R". It would be a shame to discourage that.

We should stick to the voting as established. Fortunately the two separate votes (first by the community and then a binding vote by committers) gives committers the flexibility for take into account the total scores for a "family" of designs before casting final votes.

Also: just because the deadline for submitting new designs is in ~8 hours, doesn't mean we have to hold the vote immediately – we can give people time to discuss each of the "families" and which one is the strongest candidate from each and let the creator retract any less popular variations before holding the vote.

Attached solr.s7.jpg. Very resizable. Focus on search rather than "solar".

the contest submissions are now closed (see http://wiki.apache.org/solr/LogoContest) – however, unless there are objects, I'll go ahead and add solr.s7.jpg to the final list.

I'll send out a draft instruction email shortly.
