This should probably wait for the next time there's an ABI and SONAME change.
While it's unlikely to come up with this particular package, it's now considered best practice to always build C and C++ source with large files enabled. With Autoconf, this is generally as simple as adding AC_SYS_LARGEFILE to configure.ac. There is discussion of making this the default compilation mode in a later version of glibc, so doing this in conjunction with a planned ABI change may avoid some compatibility issues later.
