Description

The name ShardingSphere is inspired by ecosystem of database sharding. The name before entering ASF incubator of the project is Sharding-JDBC which means using JDBC to handle database sharding. As more and more clients like Sharding-Proxy and Sharding-Sidecar join, the original name of Sharding-JDBC is not appropriate, so we keep the "Sharding" part and replace "JDBC" with "Sphere", since "Sphere" means ecosystem.

Apache ShardingSphere is an ecosystem consisted of a set of distributed database middleware solutions, including 2 independent products, Sharding-JDBC, Sharding-Proxy. They all provide functions of data sharding, distributed transaction, database and data governance, applicable in a variety of situations such as Java isomorphism and heterogeneous language.
