      Description

DataSketches.github.io‚Äč is our open source, high-performance library of stochastic streaming algorithms commonly called "sketches" in the data sciences and in numerous published papers about these algorithms.

Note: the term "sketch" commonly refers to an artistic visualization or drawing that is usually quite sparse.

However, the use of the term "sketch" in the study of streaming algorithms refer to a synopsis of some larger set of data where the synopsis is approximate, sparse (WRT retained data), and can be executed or created quickly. These properties are shared with artistic sketches, but this is where the similarity ends. Our DataSketches leverage the term "sketches" as used in the scientific literature about streaming algorithms and has nothing to do with the visualization arts at all.

The other use of the pair of words "data sketches" are sites about visualizations of data. Our use of the term "DataSketches" leverages the use of the scientific use of the word sketches and not the artistic visualization use of the term.
