Apache has deprecated MD5 files as noted here: http://www.apache.org/dev/release-publishing.html
We already create SHA1 hash files, there is really no need for MD5.
MD5 also add an extra manual step to delete them from dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/ and they are something that sticks out on release review time.
