Customized bounce notification for openoffice.org domain

    Details

      Description

The legacy OpenOffice.org project had an email forwarding service. Similar to what we do with Apache, project volunteers were given openffice.org email addresses which would forward to their real addresses. Based on previous ASF Board discussions, we will not be migrating this forwarding service to Apache. And oracle is telling us that they will be shutting down the legacy forwarding service after March 15th. At the same time the legacy mailing lists will be shutdown. These also have openoffice.org email addresses.

What we're hoping can be done is something like the following:

      1) On or soon after March 15th, we update MX DNS records for openoffice.org so such traffic gets routed to Apache rather than Oracle

      2) We bounce back all such openoffice.org emails received

      3) This is the key part. We don't want just a generic bounce error message. We want to bounce back with a custom response, one where we can explain the shutdown and direct the user to a project webpage where we can give a directory of where the new addresses are. So legacy security list would map to the new ooo-security list, etc. We just want to give the link to the mappings. We don't want to automate the forwarding due to the large amount of spam the legacy lists receive.

Thanks for explaining the constraints here. Since we don't want to deal with the privacy and security issues of accepting these emails, I think the one line reject message, with URL, is best.

Can we use this as the URL?

        http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html#legacy-openofficeorg-lists

        Thanks!

        Rob,

This is the example of a REJECT message that the sender will get. Of course we will need to cut over any MX records too, of course you will need to tell us which ones these are.

550 5.1.1 <pctony@brokendomain.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown - This email service has been retired please visit http://foo.com/bah.

        Rob,

You cannot have a multi-line REJECT message. If you want multiline, then we will need to accept mail for the domain, and setup an auto-responder instead.
Clearly, we dont have a huge amount of time to sort this so a quick reply would be appreciated.

        Cheers,
        Tony

        Create a ooo-reject map (i.e. /usr/local/etc/postfix/ooo-reject) with these contents:

        *@*.openoffice.org REJECT $REJMESSAGE
        *@openoffice.org REJECT $REJMESSAGE

Then edit main.cf, and add into the smtpd_recipient_restrictions block:

        check_recipient_access regexp:/usr/local/etc/postfix/ooo-reject,

That sounds right. Starting March 15th, Oracle will shut down their servers that are currently dealing with these emails. So by default these messages will be undeliverable. We'd like to be a little more friendly to the sender. The custom reject message would point them to a wiki page where we would say something like:

If you were looking for the legacy marketing mailing list, please send to ooo-marketing.incubator.apache.org
If you were looking for the legacy security mailing list, please send to ooo-security.incubator.apache.org
        .
        .
        .
        Etc...

<danielsh> So, just to make sure I understand, you want us to, within 14 days, configure our MX's to reply with a custom reject message to ALL RCPT TO:<*@*openoffice.org> mail? And not accept any of it?fff
