      Description

      We have been seeing the hdfs tests on trunk and branch-2 error out with fork failures. I see the hadoop jenkins trunk build is also seeing these:

          I've run into this problem before where a test is exiting prematurely, causing surefire to report a fork failure. This is not really the failure of fork() system call. We get this when a forked test process exits before the test harness has a chance to do it. For example, the following will generate a fork failure.

            @Test
            public void TestBlowUp() throws InterruptedException {
              Thread.sleep(3000);
              System.exit(-1);

            }

          If the exit code is set to zero in the above example, surefile will still error out, but it won't be a fork failure. On a related note, I have recently seen the MiniDFSCluster reporting an exit exception in multiple test cases.

          I noticed that TestHDFSServerPorts creates zero byte result file. The output file wasn't flushed on exit, so it didn't show the whole story.
          I ran the command ran by maven directly and got following:

          Good investigation, Kihwal. Two things:

          1. No daemon in HDFS should be using System.exit(...) directly. Instead, they should be using ExitUtil.
          2. We should probably change NameNode#startTrashEmptier to not make an RPC at all, and instead get the trash period directly from the configuration.

          It is already using ExitUtil but systemExitDisabled was not set in the test. So it called System.exit(1).

          agreed.

          Thanks for triaging Kihwal!

          Patch attached.

          NN#startTrashEmptier is not currently making an RPC. This patch updates NameNode#startTrashEmptier to use the conf to determine the interval rather than get the server defaults object (which checks the operation, which fails in the BN case). The conf is the same that was used to initialize server defaults so it's the same value.

          We've seen a similar issue in our HBase build, and it appears to be fixed in this Surefire plugin issue: https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-870

          This issue is fixed in release 2.12.1 and above. We are currently running a build to verify that the issue is fixed by specifying the 2.12.3 version of surefire in our HBase pom.xml
